Johnny vs Cambridge United
Brentford make nine changes
I was really excited to see this match as it was the first match of the Carabao Cup. Brentford went into the game having won against Middlesbrough in a Tuesday night league match. However Cambridge went into the game having not scored a goal this season, let alone winning. In terms of the line-up, Brentford made nine changes from the last game and Cambridge made six. I was really excited to see the new signings play their first game for the Bees.
Brentford take more control of the game
In the warm-up, the players looked relaxed and so it proved with a slow start as the game kicked off. At the second minute, Yearwood gave the ball away at the edge of the box to the opposition and Daniels made a great first save but gave it back to the opposing side, who scored. The Bees weren’t really contesting them at this point and weren’t using their normal stamina. Nineteen minutes in, the new signing (Thompson) was fouled and Brentford won a free kick. At this point, Brentford were improving and taking more control of the game but still making inaccurate passes. Brentford had lots of possession without the end product: a goal.
Brentford equalise!
The first five minutes were scrappy for the Bees. At the fifty-second minute, Valencia hit a near-post shot, forcing a low save from the goalkeeper. Brentford were lacking the quality you would expect from a decent Championship side. Too many safe passes resulted in players not getting the ball into the opposition’s half. Sixty-nine minutes in, Watkins stumbled then crossed to Forss in the box, who tucked the ball in. GOAL! The Cambridge side were looking tired now, and Thomson was starting to make a difference, but it all came too late and went into penalties. Jensen took the first penalty and scored, but then Marcondes missed, and for the next penalty Forss scored a great goal. However, it all unravelled when Brentford missed another penalty, resulting in the loss of the match.
My favourite moment
My favourite moment of the match was when Racic cleared the ball off the line and saved Brentford another goal. The atmosphere was great because all the players were giving Racic compliments. The fans, on the other hand, were cheering excitedly. This moment made Racic a close call for my Man of the Match.
My Man of the Match: Marcus Forss
My Game Rating: 5/10
